American Sign Language is not taught in person in AUHSD and, therefore, is not a class that students can sign up for during course registration. The District recognizes that some students have particular learning needs or specialized interest in American Sign Language. Students wishing to take ASL should fill out this application and return it to their counselor for approval to take an ASL course. The District Educational Services Department will provide final approval. Students should indicate a compelling reason for taking ASL and not fulfilling the Breadth requirement through a World Language or Career Technical Education course offered at their school site.
The only ASL course the District will place on a student’s transcript is the ASL course offered at no charge through a District approved online program used in AUHSD. The District has approved the curriculum and dedicated district staff to monitor student progress and ensure course completion. Students who do not wish to have ASL on their AUHSD transcript may take ASL or other accredited courses through Diablo Valley College or another accredited program. A very common practice is for students to submit a separate transcript of that course along with their high school transcript when they apply for college.
